The earliest ancestor of mine that was photographed was Mary Pickering Marshall. This amazing woman was born in 1805 in Greene County, Tennessee and lived to be 97 years old. Like so many Quakers, she left the large Friends' community in Greene County and headed west. She died in Union, Iowa in 1902. I love the white Quaker bonnet and bib - I wonder what happened to it? Wouldn't I love to have that!
My grandmother Eva (Mary's great grand-daughter) had the same slightly slanted eyes. I always thought they gave a somewhat fairy quality. Was it the bit of Welsh heritage the Pickering line had?
