Eva's father, OJ Marshall, was one of the first 4 temporary commissioners of Arthur County, Nebraska after it was organized. This was in the early 1900's. Several months later, formal elections were held and permanent commissioners were in place. OJ owned land in the county to be near his parents, William and Caroline Marshall. His parents had moved to the Sand Hills of Nebraska for Caroline's health. She eventually died of tuberculosis there in 1911 and is buried in Hyannis, NE. This photo was found in the old Arthur County Courthouse. The town of Arthur still has a Marshall street.
In her autobiography, Eva talks about her summers spent in the Sand Hills with her parents, and how much she loved it there. She enjoyed the time spent alone out on the wide prairie. One of her jobs was to take the horse and round up the cattle in the evenings and drive them home. She also mentioned that she went once a week or so to the Lena Post Office, which was closed in the 1950's. We also found a photo of the old Lena Post Office at the Arthur County Courthouse.

OJ had a realty business and provided property abstracts. He was also the first Tax Assessor of Jerauld County, South Dakota after the county was organized. This is a picture of his realty office in Wessington Springs, SD.

The house that OJ built in Wessington Springs, SD. When we visited in 2010, the current owner graciously allowed us inside. She said the house was substantially the same, as they had done maintenance but not changed the structure. In this photo, taken when the house was completed in 1902, OJ is on the porch, Frank is on the upper veranda.
